Have you made plans yet for the Mother(s) in your life?
This Sunday, May 14th we celebrate Mother’s Day. In my opinion, we should be celebrating mothers everyday. Parenting really is the hardest job in the world. They say as a parent, it never really gets easier, the worry and the focus just shifts as your kids get older and I can totally see that. Also, now that I have a girl, the set of worries I have for her are completely different from the worries I have for my son. Can I just say now how much I am dreading her teenage years?!
Anyway, it’s been our tradition on Mother’s Day to go out for a fancy Sunday brunch. Rowell usually picks out the restaurant and we get a little more dressed up than usual. This year, I told him I wanted to do something different, avoid the crowds and spend the day outdoors. So instead we are going to have a picnic at the park, away from the noise and chaos and just enjoy our time together. We’ll play with the kids, they’ll run around and (hopefully) Rowell and I will get to enjoy some wine while we relax in the great outdoors.
If you still don’t know what to do for the mother’s in your life this Sunday, here are 5 ideas that will be sure to surprise her.
Plan a fancy picnic at the park
Not just your average picnic but make it special by packing some specialty food items such as her favorite bottle of wine, cheese, fruits and finger foods. Don’t forget to bring the picnic basket and a nice blanket and get some great photos that you can develop and put in a frame for her too.
Spend the day at the beach
Grab your beach towels, pack some snacks and head to your favorite beach. A relaxing and fun way to spend a holiday for me is going to the beach but if you’re not prepared, it can be a little stressful so make sure you plan accordingly. Check the weather, the parking situation, the bathroom situation, etc… and most importantly make sure the Mother in your life will be pampered while she is there. For me, an umbrella (for shade), my favorite book, some snacks and the sound of the ocean is all I need.
Have a BBQ at home
Want to avoid the crowds during this holiday? Have a BBQ at home, turn on some music, open a good bottle of wine and get grilling. One of the things I miss the most when we moved to the Bay Area is having barbecues at home. We no longer have a yard so I miss hanging out in our yard, and having a barbecue with friends and family. It’s my favorite way to spend a Sunday.
Head to a winery
If the mom in your life is a wine lover like I am, take her to wine country for the day. There are so many wineries in the Bay Area but my favorites are Larson Family Winery because of their kid-friendly and dog-friendly atmosphere and Domaine Carneros Domaine Carneros for their beautiful scenery and sparkling wine. A great gift to go along with the wine tasting could be a wine subscription or a really good bottle to save for a special occasion.
Plan a day at the spa and while she’s away, hire a cleaner to clean the house and prepare her favorite dinner for when she gets home
Okay, this is probably my favorite idea. Trust me, she will LOVE this! I mean who wouldn’t love a day at the spa and then to come home to a clean house and dinner on the table?! (hoping my husband reads this, hint, hint!) I don’t know any woman who doesn’t love getting pampered. Whether its a massage, facial, mani/pedi, blowout or all of the above, she deserves to be fussed over for the day. And then to come home to a squeaky clean house and her favorite meal on the table…bonus points!!
Picnic at the beach is always a good idea. Good food & great views. :]

Yes, I totally agree! It’s quite relaxing and a break from the busy restaurants that day.
I’m not able to spend Mother’s day with my mama, but I’m gonna see her in a few weeks and I think she would LOVE a picnic! Thanks for the idea!
These are all such great ideas! My mom would love picnic at the park. We used to do that when we were little, it would bring back so many memories!

Great ideas! Love all of them – especially the one about sending her to the Spa and having her house cleaned in the meantime 😉
